WASHINGTON More than 400 years ago, Michelangelo successfully attacked a crime problem threatened by plans for the great basilica of St. Peter's in Rome. Now his solution is on show at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, a city that has a big crime problem of its own.
The problem of the 1540s lay in corridors called ambulatories, planned for three of the basilica's sides. It was to be the largest church in Christendom and cover nearly 10 acres, equal to several city blocks in Washington.
