MANYELETI, South Africa Night No. 1. It is midnight in the African bush, and I am listening.

In the distance, a hyena is calling, but that's not the sound that's gotten my attention. I hear something scratching at the corner of my two-cot tent. Could it be the rodent we were warned about? The one that likes to eat toothpaste?

I roll over, brushing my shoulder against the roof, and shine a penlight toward the noise. Nothing there. The light must have scared it away. I drift back to sleep.
