TROY Romeo Naples resigned Tuesday as Rensselaer County Democratic chairman, saying his health can ``no longer withstand the effort and stress'' of leading the fractured party following the federal corruption trial of his predecessor and longtime political mentor, Edward F. McDonough.

Naples, 60, stepped down as federal officials are expected to announce today that a decision has been made on all unresolved charges against McDonough and his wife, Marion. Sources say the remaining charges may be dropped.
