Iran's supreme leader backs the pragmatic former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, in his decision to stand in next month's elections for the Assembly of Experts, a crucial state body. The move is seen as an attempt by Ayat Ali Khamenei to ensure there is a balance between the different factions within the 86-member assembly and to restrict the influence of fundamentalists.
