GARDAI confronted by pit bull dogs at the homes of Dublin criminals are using armed officers for protection, the Evening Herald has learned.

Gun-carrying gardai are backing up dog handlers who accompany detectives on searches of homes where the feared dogs are kept by unscrupulous owners.
