Among Adirondack enthusiasts, Orson Schofield "Old Mountain" Phelps has earned a reputation made up of equal parts Daniel Boone, Henry David Thoreau and folksy crackpot.

He was the classic mountain guide, cranky and barely domesticated, given to colorful utterances like "Soap is a thing that I hain't no kinder use for."

Bill Healy, a rare and used book dealer in Schenectady, has uncovered a different Phelps, a thoughtful writer and would-be scholar of his region, infinitely more sophisticated than his image.
