This paper analyzes the metaphysical assumptions underlying the Birth of Tragedy. First, it argues against previous interpretations (in particular J. Young's) that reading the text from a strict Schopenhauerian perspective makes it impossible (a) to construe the Apollonian and the Dionysian without contradiction and (b) to understand the redemptive function attributed to art by the Birth. Second, the paper offers a reconstruction of Nietzsche's inchoate Artisten Metaphysik which allows for both. ...
