Jan. 2--ALBANY -- Sir William Johnson gave Lake George its English name and, during the French and Indian War, built Fort William Henry at its south end. He was an Irish immigrant born in 1715 and a redhead. He often dressed in the style of his Indian neighbors rather than the woolen britches other 18th-century gentlemen wore. But the smaller details of the man's life are lesser-known because the personal papers Johnson left behind are fragile and hidden away in the State Library in Albany.
