Although steel nails are the most commonly used, nails are also made of aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze and plastic.

Aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, stainless steel and plastic nails are rustproof. Bright steel nails will rust so they should not be used where rusting would cause discoloration or staining.

Plastic nails are lightweight and paintable, but their tensile strength is much greater than their shear strength so they are not suitable for framing jobs. They must be installed with a nail gun instead of a hammer.
