ABSTRACT. Phytoplankton, nitrate (N[O.sup.-.sub.3]) (mg [L.sup.-1]), and phosphate (P[O.sup.3-.sub.4]) (mg [L.sup.-1]) concentrations were studied in Lake James, NC, during 1997 and 1998. Depths of 2.0, 10, and 30 m were chosen for sampling to determine the vertical distribution of phytoplankton. At 2.0 and 10 m, the species diversity of Heterokontophyta was mainly represented by Mallomonas caudata (Ivanov); Chlorophyta by Chlamydomonas polypyrenoideum (Prescott); Bacillariophyta b...

Vertical distribution of fish larvae and its relation to water column structure in the southwestern Gulf of California (1).
Pacific Science ; Abstract: The seasonal evolution of vertical distribution of fish larvae and its relationship with seasonal stratification, as measured by a quantitative stability parameter, were analyzed for a region off Bahia de La Paz in the southwestern Gulf of California. Samples were obtained with an

Current profiles trials throughout water column
Sea Technology ; Trials to obtain current profiles throughout the water column in water depths to 2,000 meters are being undertaken by Shell Global Solutions, using systems supplied by RD Instruments Inc. Drilling superintendents on exploration rigs need real-time information on ocean currents in order to assess
Chemical induction of larval settlement behavior in flow.
The Biological Bulletin ; Introduction Larval recruitment is a major factor regulating the population dynamics of marine benthic invertebrates (Gaines et al., 1985; Roughgarden et al., 1988; Underwood and Fairweather, 1989; Menge, 1991). Two fundamental steps in the recruitment process are settlement and metamorphosis. The
British Antarctic survey purchases ASL water column profilers
Sea Technology ; ASL Environmental Sciences (Sidney, British Columbia, Canada) has announced the sale of two of its 120 kHz water column profilers to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) through its U.K. agent, Hampshire-based Hydrosphere U.K. Ltd. These instruments will be used as the focus of a cluster of
