Research suggests that the loss of control over certain impulse behaviors has a biological influence, and is associated with a depletion of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that facilitate the passage of impulses from one neuron (nerve cell) to the next, across the small gaps between neurons, called synapses.
