Robert Motherwell, the abstract painter who died Tuesday, left a huge imprint on the world art scene. He also will be remembered locally because of an art controversy that rages even to this day.
Mr. Motherwell's world reputation is secured by a collection of art that includes such murals as "New England Elegy," which the artist produced after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
