The European Monetary Union is one of the most ambitious international economic efforts in history. When completed, it will cover more than 400 million people in 16 European countries and will result in the largest gross domestic product in the world. The framework of the monetary union was established in the Maastricht Treaty of 1993, and efforts are currently focused on the establishment of stable EC-wide currency.
