A strong earthquake struck the Soviet Central Asian republic of Tadzhikistan today, triggering landslides that buried parts of three villages and killed as many as 1,000 people, the Tass news agency said.
One village, Sharora, was buried under a 45-foot wall of dirt and mud, officials said.
"Almost everybody died," said Zainiddin Nasreddinov, editor-in-chief of the official Tazhikistan news agency, who visited Sharora.
