As New York's official state author, E.L. Doctorow does solemnly swear to uphold the time-honored tradition of the dissident writer, or, as he puts it, "to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable."

Doctorow - who spoke from his home in New Rochelle, Westchester County, where he is riding the crest of critical acclaim for his just-released novel, "Billy Bathgate" - will be in Albany Wednesday
