When the La Salle School for Boys opened in 1854 as St. Vincent's Male Orphan Asylum, it was as a home for youngsters orphaned by an 1852 cholera epidemic.
Its focus has changed, but as La Salle begins to celebrate its 135th year today,
the residential school on Western Avenue remains true to its mission: helping "young men who've experienced difficulties."
Today those "difficulties," as executive director Brother Brice Wilder delicately puts it, reflect society's darker side. Drug abuse tops the list ...
