When the TV news switches to Prague, I search the faces looking for mine.

My mother's parents were born in Prague before there was a Czechoslovakia. To my unending regret, I knew them hardly at all. My grandmother died when I was 5. I have only three or four faint memories of her.

My grandfather always resisted learning any more English than was required to deal in shops or at meals. He relied on Gramma,

who went to school in this country to learn the language; when she died, my mother and her sisters ...
