In the Sung period (960-1279), the illustrious Chinese scholar-painter Su Tung-po (1036-1101) remarked that 'Before you can paint bamboo, it must first grow in your heart.' (1) Calligraphy in this context is regarded as a 'picture of the mind'. It reveals the depth of the Zen calligrapher's state of being as discernible in the physical traces of sumi ink brushed on to paper, which are directly and spontaneously painted with no retouching, in the immediacy of the moment.
