Russia has historically been supportive of the Serbian causes. This is attributed to cultural links shared by Russia and Serbia such as the closely related Slavic languages they spoke and the forms of Orthodox Christianity they practice. Russia was also seen to favor the Serbian position in the current war in Bosnia.
