It's unclear what the health-care landscape will look like if the state adopts all the painful recommendations of the "right-sizing" commission on hospitals and nursing homes.

But one thing is certain: There's just too much that the community risks losing if public institutions like the Van Duyn nursing home and University Hospital are privatized without a thorough analysis of all potential consequences.

Above all else, the state must ensure that, whatever the fate of Van Duyn and University, both facilities continue their roles as "safety nets" for people with special ...
