"I'M holding my breath . . . oh my goodness, that's just fabulous, absolutely fabulous," cried Patricia Oliver, the curator of the Alfred Beit Foundation, when word came through from London.

The news was good. Very good. The Beit Collection of Italian Bronzes made EU3.8m when it went under the hammer yesterday at Christie's auction house in London.

The sum, which far exceeded pre-sale expectations, astounded the art world and sparked jubilation at Russborough House in Co Wicklow.
