Selecting the right modem involves the issues of speed capabilities and price. Prospective modem buyers need to consider which modem speed is the best for them. There are a variety of speeds from which to choose, including 1200 bps, 2400 bps, 9600 bps and 14,400 bps. Although there are still some 1200-bps modems still available, they are too old and slow to be practical. Standard fax modems, operating at 2400-9600 bps are usually available for between $100 and $160.
