McMurr'y's Hood is a man whose military development was forever influenced by two factors. First, he was born in the romanticism of the post-1830 South. It was an era when Southerners were increasingly turning away from their earlier nationalism. In addition, Hood revered Robert E. Lee, the model of the Southern myth of chivalry. Thus, Hood was essentially a romantic in a conflict that became the first modern war.
Second, Hood's leadership of the Army of Tennessee was modeled after his earlier experiences in the Army of Northern Virginia in 1862-63 under Lee. It was ...
