The Colossus of Rhodes had stood for only 56 years when an earthquake fractured its knees and caused it to collapse. An oracle counseled the Rhodians not to repair the statue, and so, for more than 800 years, its ruins lay neglected. Only after Arabs invaded Rhodes in A.D. 654 and sold what survived as scrap did the Colossus leave Rhodes--carried to Asia on the backs of 900 camels.
