Over the years, the policy of neglect fostered by a revenue-sharing formula that has shortchanged the inhabitants of the Niger Delta from where Nigeria produces most of its oil, has bred serious discontent within the region. This inequality has encouraged the leaders of the area to organise resistance to the government and the oil companies, and until major concessions are made, the confrontations will not end. Ejiroghene Barrett looks at the background of the conflict.
