In 1892, when the Maryinsky Theatre premiered Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov's ballet, "The Nutcracker," the response was tepid. Tchaikovsky's score was popular, but one St. Petersburg critic wrote of the ballet: "For dancers there is rather little in it, for art absolutely nothing, and for the artistic fate of our ballet, one more step downward."
