Famous as Bertie Wooster's favourite tipple, gin and tonic is a very British affair. Although gin was invented in Holland in the 1650s, it was not until the 19th century that its famous marriage with tonic water came about. It all started when officers of the British Army in India (employees of the British East India Company) were frustrated at the reluctance of soldiers to drink down tonic water containing quinine.
The substance was used to ward off malaria but it was bitter.
