This book is in large part a history of Oxford University in the period between 1300 and the Black Death. The author mentions Cambridge from time to time, and devotes a chapter to higher education outside the universities; he also follows graduates through their later careers in the entourage of bishops, at the royal court or in attendance on the Pope at Avignon.
