Annibale Pocaterra, a physician and poet from Ferrara, Italy, published 'Dialoghi Della Vergogna' ('Two Dialogues on Shame') in 1592. This book is important because it offered the first explicit defense of shame as a valuable emotion both for individual people and for society in general. Pocaterra, who died at age 30 in 1592, elaborated on suggestions in much of ancient and medieval literature from Aristotle to Dante. However, Pocaterra's still-valid thesis that shame is essential for mental well-being is worthy enough to earn him far more recognition than he is given.
