Amtrak trains are getting to their destinations later and later, and their tardiness is costing Amtrak more and more money, not to mention customer good-will.
In 1983, Amtrak trains rolled up an 82% ontime record. In FY 1993, that figure had slumped to 71%. In the first half of FY 1994, which began last Oct. 1, the ontime record was 70.9%.
One measurable result of this was that in FY 1993, Amtrak paid $14.7 million on hotels, meals, and alternate transportation for passengers who missed their connections. Passenger complaints about late trains doubled. Impossible to ...
