When Kenneth Rexroth's collection of verse plays, Beyond the Mountains, was republished as a New Directions paperback in 1974, I read it with a peculiar excitement because of the last two of the four pieces, "Hermaios" and "Berenike." All the plays in the volume are in a sense Greek plays. The first two, "Phaedra" and "Iphigenia," are recreations of myths already dealt with by classic Greek dramatists and their European successors. But nobody before has taken the unsung epic of the last of all Greek kingdoms, that of Bactria, and turned it into remarkable verse, as Rexroth ...
