One-hundred-and-thirty patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery were randomly assigned to routine postoperative care or routine care plus listening to a guided imagery tape for each of the three days before surgery; listening to a music-only tape during anesthesia induction, during surgery, and in the recovery room; and listening again to a guided imagery tape for the first six postoperative days. The tape led the patients through a calming and focusing routine with special suggestions about releasing anxiety and negativity and allowing themselves to feel safe and relaxed. ...
