He took his time. It was a new day: Wednesday, April 27, 1994. Nelson Mandela was in no particular hurry this sunny morning. Dressed in casual clothes, perhaps a sign of his common touch, he walked slowly through the polling station at Ohlange High School, just north of Durban to mark his "X." It had been no easy walk to freedom. No doubt Mandela's mind was filled with the images of Chris Hani, Oliver Tambo, Steven Biko and the countless others who didn't live to see the rebirth of South Africa.
