I AM writing this on the 11th of November, Remembrance Day, a good day to think about identity, what that word means and what comes of it for good or for bad.

Let me import a term from my day job: fuzzy set.

In classical set theory, we deal with sharp binary conditions' in plain English, something is in or out and usually can only belong to that set and not to others. With fuzzy sets, things can be a bit in one set and a bit in others as well.

For me identity works when it is fuzzy and is dangerous beyond belief when it is sharp.
