I want to discuss The Acharnians by Aristophanes. Partly because I doubt whether anyone has ever begun a newspaper column with it.

Who, what, when? you're probably asking.

Aristophanes was a writer of comedies in Athens in the 5th Century BC. Eleven of his plays survive - and are sometimes still performed - dealing with everything from contemporary politics and the gender gap to philosophy and the legal system. He's witty, scurrilous, rude, satyrical and sometimes too clever by half.
