The European Commission has confirmed that nearly 1.150 million tonnes of sugar quotas are to be definitively abandoned in the EU in 2006-2007, the first year in which the sugar reform' decided a year ago has been applied. The countries most affected are Italy (778,000 tonnes), Ireland (199,000 tonnes), Spain (93,000 tonnes), Sweden (42,500 tonnes) and Portugal (35,000 tonnes).
In 2007-2008, aid requests have already been submitted for the abandon of 41,500 tonnes of additional sugar quotas, including 24,900 tonnes in Italy and 16,600 tonnes in Spain. In addition, there are ...
