There was a time when most of the positions of artistic director in the nation's major nonprofit theater establishments were held by men. Today, however, a changing of the guard is occuring, and women artists are making their presence felt. This trend reflects the increased executive opportunities in America today as a result of the feminist movement. The effects of this change in the American theater movement is assessed based on the viewpoints of various women artistic directors.
