Ultraviolet radiation tied to 60,000 deaths.(Brief article)

Ultraviolet radiation from the sun causes a considerable global disease burden and is linked to 60,000 deaths each year, according to a recent World Health Organization report.

The report, released in July, estimated that of those deaths, 48,000 are caused by malignant melanomas and 12,000 by skin carcinomas. And more than 1.5 million years of life are lost every year due to excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure.

While the report noted that ultraviolet radiation does have such beneficial effects as producing vitamin D, dangers from sun over-exposure are much greater. ...
