A SALE of Impressionist paintings at Christie's in New York this week made [pounds sterling]250 million, breaking the record for the most made at any art auction.

And the most fiercely fought-over works were four paintings by Gustav Klimt, which were looted by the Nazis during World War II and only recently returned to their rightful owner, Maria Altmann, a 90-yearold Holocaust survivor.

The pictures, snatched by the Nazis in 1938 from Mrs Altmann's uncle Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, fetched a total of [pounds sterling]100million. ...
