SPEND ANY TIME at all listening to Theresa Augustin talk about mushrooms and the important role they play in nature and you'll never again kick over another one - certainly not just for the fun of it.

"Their purpose is to decompose," says Augustin, curator of natural areas at Norfolk Botanical Garden. "If we didn't have mushrooms, we'd have dead stuff piled to the sky. We'd have no soil."
