Many information systems managers believe they will be forced to adopt massively parallel processing (MPP) systems to handle growing corporate databases, but as yet no reliable commercial MPP systems are available. MPP computers, which have been described as a replacement for mainframe computers, are scalable machines that can use hundreds or thousands of processors. This differs symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) systems, which can be expanded to only about 40 processors because of limitations on system memory.
