Since the Open Software Foundation failed to deliver its Distributed Management Environment standard for combined systems and enterprise network management, several products on the market are vying for position as the de facto standard. Popular network management packages such as Novell's NMS, Sun Microsystems' SunNet Manager, IBM's Netview/6000 and HP's OpenView often also act as simple adapters between network and node agents.
