Nov. 5--DESTIN -- Common sense dictates that red tide will keep people away from the beach, but a new study shows just how much algal blooms hurt business.
After studying five years of tax data from Destin and Fort Walton Beach, economists Sherry Larkin and Charles Adams concluded that hotels and restaurants lost up to an average of 32.3 percent of their revenue when red tide was present from 1995 to 1999.
