The Ocean Drilling Program's (ODP) Leg 122 and Leg 123 were drilled at or near the Exmouth Plateau in the Indian Ocean. The area has been known as a prospective site of extensive petroleum deposits. The ODP's drilling was aimed at studying the plateau's geology and the history of the Mesozoic Tethys Ocean. However, it also stumbled upon Late Triassic limestones with reefs, which may indicate the presence of huge petroleum deposits.
