Magnetic polarity stratigraphy may be used as a correlation and dating method for marine sediments. It is based on the reversal of the Earth's prevailing magnetic field after every few thousand years. A magnetic polarity time scale of 300 reversals over the last 160 million years has been obtained based on the study of sedimentary rocks, which acquire the signature of the prevailing magnetic field as they are deposited.
