Self-doubt in the wilderness in 'Paradise Regain'd.'

The descent of Jesus into the wilderness occurred twice in John Milton's 'Paradise Regained.' However, while the first descent was into the desert to meditate, the second, as the Son of Mary, was into himself. This second descent into himself suggests the wilderness of his mind, a metaphor related to wilderness theology. Significantly, Jesus clings to his identity as the Son of Mary at this point, which is symbolic of his realization as a human of himself as God the Son.
