Other places, other times: the sites of the Proems to 'The Faerie Queene.'

Edmund Spencer's six Proems that precede each of the six books of 'The Faerie Queene' are a literary device created by Spencer to simultaneously frame the rest of the poem and draw the reader into it. The Proems distance both the reader and the poem from reality and establish the place and perspective of the poem. While similar to Geoffrey Chaucer's method of framing fiction with prefatory matter, Spencer's Proems are unique in that they do not flow into the rest of the poem. No source for this Spencerian device has yet been identified.
