Three high-ranking Belgian officials were implicated in a corruption scandal over a $330 million procurement contract for the Belgian army. Walloon Premier and former party leader Guy Spitaels was accused of instructing Vice Premier Guy Coeme to ensure that Italian arms company Agusta SpA obtain the contract to sell 46 helicopters to the army amid fierce competition from French and German firms. Interior Minister for Wallonia Guy Mathot, on the other hand, was accused of receiving funds from Agusta for the election fund of the Socialist Party.
