Seeking low-cost diamond films.

Mark Cappelli and colleagues at Stanford (CA) Univ. are closer to finding a chemistry that could result in inexpensive production of diamond films.

The group employs an arc-jet engine in a chemical vapor deposition method involving plasmas of either methane and hydrogen or acetylene and hydrogen. The arc-jet engine's electrical discharge breaks the hydrogen atoms free. In the case of methane, once the four hydrogen bonds are broken, the carbon atom seeks electrons to fill the gaps in its outer shell.
