A ballot initiative last year cleared the way for slot machines promising bigger, more frequent payouts to debut in South Florida. Proponents want to see them proliferate across the region. The question is: Will it pay off?
Two facilities, Gulfstream Park in Hallandale and Mardi Gras Racetrack & Gaming Center (formerly the Hollywood Greyhound Track) plan to begin operating "Las Vegas-Style" slot machines this month--the first of four parimutuel sites in Broward County to offer them, following approval from voters in 2004.
